Allendale, MI — With three seniors taking the ice for their last home game at the Georgetown Ice Center, the Lakers were determined to get a momentum-changing win before heading into the North Regional Tournament next weekend. Prior to the drop of the puck, the Laker faithful honored senior forwards Aaron Misner, Tommy Renkes and Andrew Gilgallon with a small ceremony recognizing their accomplishments during their Laker careers. Coach Todd Charlesworth also assembled the three into a line for the opening shift of the game. Goaltender Scott Tiefenthal started in net for the Lakers.

Much like the night before, the Stars struck first, and then again, to give themselves the 2-0 lead. But this night would ultimately belong to the Lakers. Alex Host opened the scoring for the Lakers to cut the lead to 2-1 before heading into the locker rooms down after the first period of play. Directly off a face-off in the Stars’ zone, David Stone swooped in, picked up the puck, and found Host open in front who buried the one-timer for the Lakers.

The second period would prove to be all Lakers as they caught fire and their offense came alive. Breaking out of their own zone on the powerplay, Cory Farrell dished the puck off to a streaking Tim Marney who entered the left side of the Stars’ zone. He dropped the puck back to Stone who returned the puck to Marney in the left corner as he circled around the net and put home the wrap around to even the game at 2. On yet another Laker powerplay, they broke out of their own zone as this time Renkes flew down the left side of the ice with the puck. He cut to the middle and fired a shot just wide as it rimmed up the boards where Gilgallon was able to chip it back into the corner for Host. Host was hit and taken off the puck as Gilgallon picked up the loose puck and headed towards the net firing a shot that was stopped by the Stars’ netminder. The puck remained loose as both Renkes and Stone chipped away at it before Stone was able to knock it past the goaltender to give the Lakers the 3-2 lead. Shortly after, defenseman Doug Smotel picked up the puck in his own end and led the Lakers on a 3-on-2 rush entering the right side of the Stars’ zone. He skated towards the middle of the ice before firing a shot on net that was put home on the rebound by Stone to extend the Laker lead to 4-2. Following another face-off in the Stars’ end, the Laker line of Renkes, Tom Halpin, and Evan Olds caused havoc for the Stars’ as they had them running around in their own zone. Olds fired a shot that missed the target where it rimmed up the boards for Luke Chase who promptly tossed it back to the corner for Halpin. Halpin found Olds behind the net who found a wide open Renkes in front for the one-timer, glove side high to give the Lakers a 5-3 lead heading to the dressing room after two periods of play.

The third period was more of the same as the Laker offense continued to storm the Stars’ net and would eventually put four more past the Stars’ netminder. After some tremendous forechecking pressure by the line of Marney, Host, and Stone, Marney took the puck on the left side and quickly dished it to Stone on the side of the net as Marney drove to the front. Stone walked out and tried to stuff it home but the puck bounced around before Marney found it and buried it to give the Lakers a 6-3 lead. After a faceoff in the Laker end, the puck got past a Stars’ defenseman and allowed Ben Sikkenga and Danny Leja to streak in on a 2-on-1. Sikkenga picked the puck up on the left side before slipping a pass to Leja who fired home the one-timer to give the Lakers a commanding 7-3 lead. Soon after, Tom Halpin connected to give the Lakers the 8-3 advantage. Defenseman Mathew Schulte blocked a shot from a Stars’ forward and then picked up the puck and found Olds on the right side near the Laker bench. Olds zipped a pass to Halpin who danced his way outside-in on a Stars’ defender before deking the netminder and tucking it home for the goal. Rounding out the scoring for the Lakers this evening would be Marney who completed the hat trick. Defenseman Tommy Skelton slipped the puck to Marney in the Laker zone who chipped it past a pinching Stars’ defenseman as he, Host, and Stone were off the races on a late developing 3-on-1. Marney went left to right with a slick toe drag around a sprawling Stars’ defenseman before firing the puck past the Stars’ netminder to seal the game 9-3 and send the Lakers off their home ice for the last time this season with a convincing victory. Goaltender Scott Tiefenthal made some key saves in the game for the Lakers, keeping the Stars’ from mounting any sort of comeback.

The now third seeded Lakers will take on 10th seed Kettering University on Friday night at the Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, MI at 7:30 PM in their attempt to claim a berth at the National Tournament in March.

East Lansing, MI — In their last weekend of the regular season before heading into the North Regional playoffs next weekend against #10 Kettering University, the Lakers traveled to Lansing to face off against the Lansing Community College Stars on Friday night. Pete Herman got the nod between the pipes for the Lakers.

The night started rough for the Lakers as the Stars struck on the opening shift of the game to give themselves an early 1-0 lead. Just over four minutes later the Stars struck again to extend their lead to 2-0. The Lakers would get their only goal of the evening with just 49 seconds remaining in the period as Tim Marney connected to cut the lead to 2-1. Directly off a face-off win in the Stars’ zone, the puck found its way to the point for Josh Light who fired a pass in front for David Stone as it ricocheted behind the net. The puck bounced back towards the net off the boards before Marney was able to control the loose puck and fire it past the Stars’ netminder. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Stars capitalized just 15 seconds later to extend their lead to 3-1 heading into the locker rooms.

The rest of the game was scoreless, but the physical play intensified as each team delivered numerous big hits. Despite getting of 65 shots in the contest, the Lakers were defeated by a final score of 3-1 and looked to rebound and send the seniors off their home ice with a win before playoffs begin, on Saturday night at the Georgetown Ice Arena at 8:00 PM.

Sterling Heights, MI — The ACHA Commissioner’s Office has handed down a ruling this morning that the formerly top-ranked Lakers must forfeit three victories from the month of January and are now subject to playing through regionals in hopes of punching their ticket to Florida.

Division III commissioner Rick Kaminski noted that although this was an unfortunate incident, sanctions must be imposed:

“The Lakers were found to have an ineligible player that played four games in the month of January. Having lost one of the four games, my ruling, in this case, was that the team would forfeit the remaining three games and the player would be ineligible for the duration of this season. The ranking committee was made aware of the situation and will be tasked with deciding where the Lakers will place, determined by their new record. The rules that were passed in Naples allow me to review each case and determine intent. There is a vast difference between a team playing a former professional or a player that does not attend their school and a returning player not reporting to the team that he did not meet the ACHA minimum academic requirements. The Laker coaching staff and administration were honest and forthcoming with my review of this player’s academic requirements.”

Blazing their way to a 17-1 record during the first semester, the Lakers had hopes of escaping the regional tournament by placing in the top two slots, ensuring a return trip to the National Tournament, in which they finished 3rd only a year ago.

Because of an academic ineligibility, the Lakers must forfeit a 6-0 victory over Jackson Community College and a pair of wins over cross-town rival Calvin College.

Head Coach Todd Charlesworth is ready to move on, but now has a point to make.

“It’s an unfortunate situation the team was put in and, as Head Coach, I take full responsibly of what transpired; for that, I apologize to the team. There’s been a certain routine we have followed for a very long time – unfortunately, we’ve had to rely on the students, and when that happens, oversights occur. The program has now implemented a new system that will avoid these mistakes in future seasons. We will accept what the ACHA rules and, hopefully, move on. We are grateful for the opportunity to work our way through regionals and prove that we still deserve a chance at a national championship. We have compiled, arguably, the most difficult schedule in the nation and our record is an accurate indication of our level of play – the players should not be penalized for something that was beyond their control.”

The three victories forfeited leaves the Lakers at an overall record of 20-6 after a weekend split of conference opponent Northwood University. This has allowed Hope College and Saginaw Valley State (reigning national champions) to secure the North Region autobids to Ft. Myers. Although forced to play two more games, the Lakers’ squad views the opportunity to make a statement – a statement that nothing has changed.

“What happened, happened,” admitted Laker senior Andrew Gilgallon. “We’re now going to take this one shift and one game at a time. This doesn’t change any team goals we made earlier in the season – to bring home a national championship to Allendale.”

The Lakers will finish out their regular season with a home-and-home with Lansing Community College before taking on 10th-ranked Kettering University in the Regional Tournament held at Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, Michigan.

Allendale, MI — One night after their first back-to-back losses of the season the Lakers returned to home ice in front of the Laker faithful and defeated the Northwood University Timberwolves by a 6-4 margin. Returning to their high tempo, high intensity roots the Lakers took care of business with Pete Herman getting the nod again for Saturday’s contest.

In the first period the Timberwolves had no answer for the Lakers’ speed and offensive prowess. The Lakers struck first at the 13:35 mark of the period, and would score three goals in the span of two minutes and 14 seconds. The first goal came off the stick of the Lakers’ leading scorer Tommy Renkes. After some tremendous pressure in the Timberwolves’ zone by Renkes, Tom Halpin, and Evan Olds, Olds corralled a loose puck and drove wide to the right side. He slipped a pass to Halpin in front who made a nifty behind-the-back drop pass to Renkes who fired it top shelf, glove side to open the scoring and the give the Lakers the 1-0 lead. One minute and six seconds later, Andrew Gilgallon would capitalize to extend the Laker lead to two. A Timberwolves’ defenseman gained control of the puck just outside his blueline before Colin Moore forced him into a turnover and took the puck down the right side into the Timberwolves’ zone, two-on-one with Gilgallon. Moore held on to the puck down the right side and then quickly zipped a pass over to Gilgallon for a tap in and a 2-0 lead. Just a minute and eight seconds later Cory Reno struck for the Lakers. After some more strong forechecking pressure by the Lakers line of Reno, Ben Sikkenga, and Danny Leja, the puck got sent down into the corner before popping out in front for Reno who buried it glove side to give the Lakers and 3-0 lead heading into the dressing room after one.

The second period would see a surge from the Timberwolves as the struck twice to cut the Laker lead to 3-2 before Tim Marney answered for the Lakers. The Lakers forced a turnover in the neutral zone as Cory Farrell found Marney streaking at center ice. Marney went left to right across the ice and made a shifty move around the defenseman before sending a backhander up over the goalie, off the back cross bar and out to give the Lakers a 4-2 lead. At the 4:51 mark of the period Sikkenga would find the back of the net for the second time in two nights as he scored on the powerplay. After he tried to find Gilgallon back door earlier on the play, the puck went to the right side boards were Tommy Skelton met a Timberwolves’ defenseman sending the puck straight up in the air. Gilgallon caught it and set it down as he drove to the net before sending a backhand pass in front for Sikkenga who sent the puck up into the shelf to give the Lakers the 5-2 lead heading to the locker rooms after the second frame.

In the third period the Timberwolves would surge again and get two goals to make the game 5-4 before David Stone sealed the deal for the Lakers with an empty net goal with 45 seconds remaining in the third. Stone picked up a loose puck and danced his way around two Timberwolves’ defenders with some shifty hands before sending the puck over a sprawling Timberwolves’ defender to give the Lakers a 6-4 victory. Herman was solid in net making some key saves including a huge save on a breakaway in the third period. The Lakers will close out their regular season next weekend with the Lansing Community College Stars. The Lakers play their last regular season home game, Senior Night, on Saturday, February 13th at the Georgetown Ice Arena at 8:00 PM.

Midland, MI — After a rough game last weekend against the Davenport University Panthers, the Lakers looked to rebound Friday night against the Northwood University Timberwolves. The Timberwolves have a distinct home ice advantage as they play their home games on an olympic-sized ice sheet, which is considerably bigger, and vastly different than the normal NHL size. Getting the start between the pipes for the Lakers was Pete Herman.

In the first period the Lakers looked sluggish as they couldn’t seem to find their tempo or their bearings on the ice surface, as they were outplayed for stretches of the first period. The Timberwolves struck first at the 9:28 mark of the period and it would turn out to be the only goal in the frame. The Lakers had some successful chances when they were able to utilize their speed and pin the Timberwolves deep in their own end, but to no avail. The Lakers would head to the dressing room down 1-0 after the first.

The second period saw the Lakers fight back with two goals in the frame. After giving up an early powerplay goal, the Lakers picked up the pace and answered back at the 12:50 mark of the second period to cut the lead to 2-1. Tommy Renkes chipped the puck out of the zone past Tom Halpin to Colin Moore who burst down the right side of the ice into the Timberwolves’ zone. Halpin drove to the net as Moore continued down the right side before ripping a shot short side, off the pipe and in to make it 2-1 Timberwolves. At the 6:34 mark however the Timberwolves’ powerplay would strike again to regain their two goal advantage. Just 44 seconds later Ben Sikkenga would capitalize on a rebound to cut the lead to one. After pinning the Timberwolves in their own end, with some strong forechecking by Sikkenga, Tim Marney, and Ryan Luke, the puck found its way to the point for Josh Light. Light walked across the blue line and fired a slap shot on net and the rebound was hammered home by Sikkenga to make the score 3-2. Unfortunately for the Lakers this evening, that would be the last goal they recorded. They headed to the locker room down 3-2 after the second frame.

The Timberwolves would add two goals in the third period including an empty net goal with 27 seconds remaining in the contest. The Lakers look to rebound tomorrow night in the friendly confines of the Georgetown Ice Arena at 8:00 PM.

Grand Rapids, MI — Going into Friday night’s game with the crosstown rival Davenport University Panthers, the Lakers had two wins against them in their only two meetings earlier this season in their pockets. After Friday’s game at Patterson Ice Arena, they remained with two wins as the Panthers were able to defeat the Lakers 6-4. Getting the nod in net for the Lakers was Pete Herman.

In the first period the Lakers would strike first in hostile territory as Tommy Renkes connected to put the Lakers up 1-0. Defenseman Josh Light fired a pass cross ice that ricocheted off the boards in front of the Panther bench and took a fortunate Laker bounce as it bounced off the Panther defenseman allowing Colin Moore to swoop in and pick up the loose puck. Moore cut across the top of the circles from left to right and fired the puck on net that was blocked before it made it to the net, but Renkes was there to hammer home the loose puck. Unfortunately that would be the only goal the Lakers would net in the first as the Panthers would roar back to score four and head into the locker room after one up 4-1.

In the second period goaltender Scott Tiefenthal replaced Herman in the net, due to no fault of his own, but the Laker staff felt the team needed a change to light a spark. In the second period the Lakers would connect to cut the lead two as Renkes found the back of the net for the second time on the evening. Following a Laker powerplay, the Lakers sustained pressure as Lucas Cardinal found himself on the right point with the puck before he cycled the puck down the boards for Tim Marney. Marney circled up into the slot and fired a shot on net as Renkes battled hard in front with a Panther defenseman and lifted the puck up and over the Panther netminder into the top shelf to narrow the margin to 4-2. The Panthers would add another in the frame and head to the dressing room up 5-2 after the second.

The third period, much like the second, showcased the Lakers resiliency as they fought back to put up 2 goals in under 30 seconds in the last three minutes of the period, but the Panthers added another and the final would be 6-4 Panthers. The first of the two goals in the frame was the result of some tremendous Laker forechecking pressure by Evan Olds, Lucas Cardinal, and Danny Leja. Leja put a crunching hit on a Panther defenseman in the left corner as the puck was worked around to the right. The other Panther defenseman was forced into a turnover as Cardinal walked to the front of the net uncontested before he froze the goalie and slipped a pass to Olds who was all alone on the left post to cut the Panther lead to 6-3. On the ensuing faceoff the Lakers would get the puck into the Panther zone and as the Panthers tried to get it out, the puck bounced to the middle near the blue line where Aaron Mascarello stepped in to intercept the loose puck. Mascarello darted in and fired a shot up over the blocker side into the shelf to give the Lakers their final tally on the night as they eventually fell 6-4. The Lakers will look to build off of and strengthen from this loss next weekend against the Northwood University Timberwolves. The Lakers will play their home game Saturday, February 6th at 8:00 PM at the Georgetown Ice Arena.

Allendale, MI — One night after learning that they were again ranked number 1 in the North Region receiving all nine first place votes, the Lakers looked to take care of business against the Jackson Community College Jets. In a game that featured the Lakers speed and offensive prowess, the Lakers would run into a hot goalie, as they won 6-0, but outshot the Jets by a staggering 63-7 margin. Junior goalie Max Cookinham would get the nod in net for the Lakers.

It took some time in the first period for the Lakers to get into a rhythm, but at the 9:58 mark of the first period, David Stone found the back of the net. Creating pressure in the Jets’ zone was the line of Stone, Cory Reno, and Alex Host. Corralling a loose puck along the boards, Stone cycled the puck deep in the right corner for Reno who threw the puck out in front of the net where Stone was able to stop it, turn and fire all in one motion, as the puck slipped 5-hole to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. This line would strike again with 37 seconds remaining in the period, as Host would find the back of the net. Much like the previous goal, this line was able to create some tremendous pressure with the help of defensemen Cory Farrell and Luke Chase. Chase pinched in from his position at the right point and sent the puck around behind the net for Stone who went around to the left of the net before finding a cutting Host for a one-timer that he buried. The Lakers held an 18-1 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead heading into the dressing room after one.

The Lakers came out flying early in the second as Lucas Cardinal connected on a tremendous individual effort (due to camera malfunction, his goal was not recorded in the highlights). After picking up a loose puck near the blue line of the Jets’ zone, Cardinal went around a Jets’ defenseman from right to left with a silky smooth toe-drag before firing a backhand shot back to the right side of the net past the Jets’ netminder to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead just 45 seconds into the second frame. The Lakers would score only one however in the second period as they took the 3-0 lead and a 44-2 shot advantage to the locker room after two.

The third period would feature three Laker tallies and some physical play. Striking first for the Lakers was defenseman Doug Smotel. After forward Aaron Misner regrouped in the neutral zone on a Laker powerplay, he found Smotel just in front of the Laker bench with a pass as Smotel took off down the right side of the ice. He entered the Jets’ zone and went wide around one defender before cutting back inside on another and unleashing a wrist shot over the Jets’ goalie’s glove hand and off the crossbar and in to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead at the 18:12 mark of the third period. At the 10:53 mark of the period Ben Sikkenga would connect to extend the Laker lead to 5. After some more Laker pressure, Misner took the puck from left to right behind the Jets’ net before he slid a pass to Farrell at the right point whose shot was redirected in front by Sikkenga 5-hole again past the Jets’ netminder. Soon after this goal the physical play would intensify as both Sikkenga and Dan Leja would show that the Lakers refused to be pushed around and intimidated by connecting to sandwich a Jets’ defenseman on a textbook hit in the corner just after a faceoff in the Jets’ end. Shortly after, the same Jets’ defenseman would take a liberty with Smotel as he hit Smotel well after the whistle on an icing which sparked some pushing and shoving. Leja and defenseman Mathew Schulte came to the aid as both wrapped up separate Jets’ players before receiving coincidental penalties. The Lakers would strike yet again with 1:01 remaining in the game to put the nail in the coffin with a 6-0 lead. Farrell regrouped the Lakers in the neutral zone and found a streaking Reno at the Jets’ blue line as he entered the zone with Stone and Host on a 3-on-2. Reno went down the left side before pivoting and finding a wide open Stone whose shot was stopped but Reno followed the play and buried the rebound to seal the game for the Lakers. The Lakers outshot the Jets 63-7 and Cookinham earned the shutout.

The Lakers have one game next weekend as they will face crosstown rival, the Davenport University Panthers on Friday, January 29th at Patterson Ice Arena at 8:00 PM.

Allendale, MI — With one win under their belt so far this weekend, the Lakers looked to complete the regular season sweep of the Calvin College Knights. After blanking the Knights 8-0 in their own rink on Friday behind strong netminding from Pete Herman, the Lakers knew the Knights would come out with everything they had to avoid their 5th straight loss. Herman would once again be sent between the pipes for the Lakers and he would have another strong showing.

At the 14:00 mark of the first period, Tim Marney would capitalize on some very pretty passing on the Laker powerplay to open the scoring. Marney won the faceoff on the right side of the Knight zone and Evan Olds knocked the loose puck back to the right point for Cory Farrell who sent it to the left side for Ryan Luke. Luke moved down toward the top of the circle and fired a pass in front to Marney, as he had gained position on his defender, who had a wide open net and made no mistake putting the Lakers up 1-0. The Knights would take advantage of their own powerplay and tie the game at one at the 11:28 mark of the period. However, just 24 seconds later the Lakers would regain the lead thanks to a Doug Smotel rocket from the point. After some tremendous forechecking pressure by Aaron Misner, Colin Moore, and Olds, Olds was able to find Smotel alone on the right point. He zipped a pass to him as Smotel walked in and unloaded a slapshot far side past the Knights’ netminder to take the lead back at the 11:04 mark of the first period. At the 9:33 mark of the first period the potent Laker powerplay would strike again. After another faceoff win, the Lakers completed what may have been the most exciting passing play of the season thus far. On the right side of the Knights’ zone Marney won the faceoff back to Farrell as he walked across the blueline under duress from a Knights’ penalty killer. Farrell threw a behind the back pass to Lucas Cardinal who slid the puck cross-ice to Marney at the left circle. Marney quickly zipped a pass cross-crease to a wide open Olds who tapped it home to extend the Laker lead to 3-1. At the 4:50 mark of the first period Olds would strike again for the Lakers. After Misner was able to keep control in the Knights’ zone on a Laker line change, he shot the puck towards the net before it would be wrapped around the boards where Josh Light held the line and threw the puck on net. The puck would bounce around before Moore was able to poke it past some Knights right to Olds who buried it in the net to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead heading into the dressing room.

In the second period the Lakers would see some penalties and unfortunate bounces go the way of the Knights as they were able to cut the lead to 4-3 going into the third period.

The Lakers responded strongly as Luke connected on another pretty passing play to give the Lakers a 5-3 lead at the 15:34 mark of the third period. Farrell made a beautiful pass from his zone to a streaking Cardinal in the neutral zone who flew down the middle alongside Marney and Luke on a 3-on-2 rush entering the Knights’ zone. Cardinal drove down the middle before the dishing the puck to the right side for Marney and continuing towards the net. Marney found a wide open Luke in front of the net as he one-timed the puck into the back of the net. The Knights would strike at the 5:07 mark to cut the lead to one, but goaltender Pete Herman shut the door and made numerous game saving stops to preserve the win and send the Lakers to a record of 21-1. The Lakers will only have one game this coming weekend as they take on the Jets of Jackson Community College on Saturday, January 23rd at 8:00 PM at the Georgetown Ice Arena.

Grand Rapids, MI — Heading into this pivotal final weekend in the fourth ranking period, the Lakers looked to knock off the cross-town rival Calvin College Knights in another home-and home series beginning at the Jolly Roger Ice Arena. The Lakers came out strong in maybe their most physical game of the season and took care of business defeating the Knights 8-0 in their own rink. Getting the nod in net for the Lakers was Pete Herman.

In the first period the Lakers and Knights battled back and forth with each team getting their share of chances but it would be the Lakers who would strike first, and often. Opening the scoring for the Lakers at the 4:07 mark of the first period was David Stone. Stone drove into the Knights’ zone and fired a shot on net that the Knights’ goaltender couldn’t corral and neither could the defenseman in front as Stone fired the rebound into the back of the net to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. A mere 39 seconds later after some relentless forechecking by the Laker line of Ben Sikkenga, Tom Halpin, and Aaron Misner, the Lakers would strike again. After Sikkenga and Halpin forced a turnover, the puck slid into the slot just in time for Misner as he turned around and fired the puck off the crossbar and into the net to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room after one.

In the second period it would be more of the same as the Lakers would score four goals in the frame. Again after some tremendous forechecking pressure, this time by Cory Reno, Alex Host and Stone, Reno would connect to extend the Laker lead to three. Stone fired a pass to the point for Cory Farrell who one-timed the puck toward the net that was redirected by Reno into the air behind the net, who in turn swept it to the right corner for Host and headed to the front of the net. Host quickly fired a pass to Reno as he ripped it past the Knights’ goaltender at the 16:50 mark of the period. At the 14:33 mark Evan Olds would connect for the Lakers. After a strong defensive stand in their own end, Colin Moore chased a Knights’ defenseman down and was able to overtake him to take the puck and drive down the left side of the ice on a 2-1 with Olds. He quickly slid a backdoor pass to Olds who made no mistake and buried it to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Soon thereafter Lucas Cardinal would send another puck off the crossbar and in for the Lakers. Just beyond their own blue line, Ryan Luke knocked the puck past a Knights’ defender to Cardinal who flew down the ice on a 3-on-1 with Luke and Tim Marney. From the left side, Cardinal, a right-handed shot, sent the puck high over the glove to give the Lakers a commanding 5-0 lead at the 13:17 mark of the period. Rounding out the scoring for the Lakers in the period was Tommy Renkes. After a Knights penalty sent the deadly Laker powerplay to the ice, Cardinal slid the puck off the faceoff win over to Farrell at the point who in turn dished it to Renkes at the top of the left circle. Renkes drifted down to the dot and ripped the puck short side high to give the Lakers a 6-0 lead at the 2:56 mark of the period. The Lakers would take that lead to the dressing room after two.

However, it wasn’t just the Laker offense that took center stage this evening as a pair of defenseman laid some bone jarring hits at center ice on a couple of Knights’ forwards. Aaron Mascarello stepped up at the red line to catch a Knights’ forward on a regroup and sent him airborne with a huge hit. Shortly after, the Knights were breaking out of their zone and a bad pass allowed Josh Light to step up and drop the hammer on another Knights’ forward sending him to the ice flat on his back. The Laker offense refused to let off the gas and at the 5:36 mark of the third period, Host found the back of the net to extend the Lakers stranglehold to 7-0. More relentless forechecking allowed the Lakers to gain control. Stone found Host behind the night who circled from the right side out in front before firing the puck into the shelf past the Knights’ netminder. Sealing the deal for the Lakers on this night would be Renkes once again. After receiving a pass in his own zone from Will Rytlewski, Renkes went coast to coast, and from one side of the ice to the other as he drove down the left side of the ice on two Knights’ defenseman before going wide and firing another puck into the shelf far side to give the Lakers a 8-0 lead. The Lakers would hold the shutout behind some terrific goaltending by Herman and extend their record on the season to 20-1.

Southfield, MI — For the second time in as many nights the Lakers defeated the Lawrence Tech University Blue Devils, this time deep in Devil Country. After a short bus ride across the state, the Lakers looked primed and ready as Scott Tiefenthal would get the nod in net for the Lakers.

The night appeared optimistic from the beginning as the Laker offense put the Blue Devils in a 5-2 stranglehold after the first period. At the 18:46 mark of the first period David Stone would find the back of the net to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. After some strong forechecking pressure, Bobby Anderson would lift the stick of the Blue Devil defender as Stone swooped in and drove to the net before sliding a backhander past the Blue Devil netminder. At the 12:54 mark of the first the Blue Devil powerplay struck to tie the game at 1. Setting the physical tone for the Lakers was Dan Leja as he caught a Blue Devil player not paying attention coming out of his zone after receiving a pass and crushed him. Just under two minutes later Doug Smotel notched his first of the season with a blast top shelf, glove side, to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Off a faceoff win by Tommy Renkes in the right side of the Blue Devil zone, Smotel walked into a slapshot and powered it past the Blue Devil goaltender. Just over two minutes later at the 10:55 mark, Stone would strike again to extend the Laker lead to 3-1. Stone received a pass from Tommy Skelton in his own zone and proceeded to bring the puck from coast to coast into the Blue Devil zone. Entering the zone he dished the puck off to Anderson who took a hit to make a play, as he sent the puck deep into the corner. Stone, Host, and Anderson would converge on the Blue Devil net before Host brought the puck out front for a shot that was put home on the rebound by Stone at the 8:44 mark of the first. Scoring for the Lakers again just under two minutes later at the 6:45 mark was Aaron Misner. Defenseman Mathew Schulte brought the puck out of the Laker zone and dumped the puck into the right corner of the Blue Devil zone. The relentless Laker forecheck would cause problems for the Blue Devils as Aaron Mascarello was able to get the puck back to the point for Josh Light who fired one on net that was deflected by Misner. The puck was stopped but Misner followed the play and picked up the puck in front and darted left before sliding the puck home past the Blue Devil netminder to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead. The Blue Devils would connect at the 2:10 mark to cut the lead to 4-2. Rounding out the scoring in the period for the Lakers was Renkes. After a Laker penalty sent the shorthanded unit out, Cory Farrell made a pass out of the zone to a streaking Evan Olds down the ride side of the ice. He and Renkes entered the Blue Devil zone 2-on-1. Olds slid the puck to the left for Renkes who fired one short side into the back of the net to give the Lakers the 5-2 lead heading off after one.

The second period was unkind to the Lakers, as they would surrender a goal and were outplayed for the majority of the period; they headed into the locker room up 5-3.

In the third period the Lakers saw their once large lead reduced to 1 as the Blue Devils connected again on the powerplay to draw the game to 5-4. However coming up large in the clutch was Olds as he iced the game at the 3:22 mark after some good, strong forechecking from the Lakers. Starting the play in his own end, Olds sent a pass to Colin Moore who gained the red line and dumped the puck into the Blue Devil zone. The Lakers buzzed around in the zone as Moore knocked a Blue Devil defender to the ice and gained control of the puck before walking out in front and putting a backhander on net that was hammered home by Olds on the rebound to give the Lakers the 6-4 lead. Tiefenthal made numerous momentum saving stops for the Lakers in net who now hold a 19-1 record on the season.

Coming up this weekend the Lakers face off against the Knights from Calvin College in another home-and-home battle with a cross-town rival. The Lakers are at the Jolly Roger Ice Arena Friday night, January 15th at 7 PM, and will return home to the friendly confines of the Georgetown Ice Arena Saturday night, January 16th at 8 PM.
